Quick answer: there are no direct flights from the United States, Canada or Europe to St Barts (Saint-Barthélemy). To get to St Barts, you first fly into a Caribbean gateway airport (St Maarten, San Juan in Puerto Rico, St Thomas, Antigua or Guadeloupe), then take a short hop on a small regional plane (from about 10 minutes to roughly 1 hour) or a ferry from St Martin. The airlines that land in St Barts are St Barth Commuter, Winair, St Barth Executive, Air Inter Iles, Tradewind Aviation, Anguilla Air Services and Cape Air, plus a wide choice of private charter operators.

This guide from the Corcoran St Barth team covers every way to reach the island: scheduled airlines, private charters, ferries and practical tips.

Why are there no direct flights to St Barts?

St Barts airport (IATA code SBH), known as Rémy de Haenen airport or St Jean airport, has one of the shortest runways in the Caribbean: about 646 meters (roughly 2,100 feet), squeezed between a hill and St Jean beach. Only small aircraft (up to about 19 seats) can land there, flown by pilots with a specific endorsement. The airport has no commercial night operations: after sunset, the runway is reserved for medical evacuations.

In practice, your trip has two legs: a flight to a Caribbean hub, then a connection to St Barts.

Step 1: fly to a Caribbean gateway

The main gateways are St Maarten (Princess Juliana, SXM), by far the most popular, San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU), St Thomas, US Virgin Islands (STT), Antigua (ANU) and Guadeloupe (Pointe-à-Pitre, PTP).

Taking the ferry from St Martin to St Barts

If you land in St Maarten, the ferry is an alternative to flying. The crossing takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour depending on the operator and sea conditions, arriving in Gustavia harbor. The main operators are Great Bay Express (from Philipsburg), Voyager (from Marigot) and Edge (from Simpson Bay, a few days a week). The channel between the islands can be choppy, so if you are prone to seasickness, flying is the more comfortable option.

Which route should you choose?

  • From the United States: fly nonstop to St Maarten (the widest choice), then connect with St Barth Commuter or Winair. Alternatives: San Juan (St Barth Executive, Tradewind) or St Thomas (Cape Air). Coming from New York? See our detailed guide to flying from New York to St Barts.
  • From Canada: fly from Toronto or Montreal to St Maarten, then take a regional connection.
  • From the UK: fly London to Antigua, then Tradewind, Winair (seasonal) or a charter.
  • From France: fly Paris to Guadeloupe or St Martin, then St Barth Commuter, St Barth Executive or Air Inter Iles from Guadeloupe, or a short hop from St Martin.

Practical tips

  • Leave time for your connection. Flights into St Barts operate in daylight only: if your international flight is late, you may have to spend the night on the gateway island. Two to three hours between flights is a sensible buffer.
  • Book early in high season. The planes have only a handful of seats and fill up fast around Christmas, New Year's and the February holidays.
  • Pack light. Small planes have lower baggage allowances and often weigh passengers and luggage. Check each airline's rules; soft bags travel better than large hard-shell suitcases.
  • Book your connection together with your main flight when possible, and consider a charter if scheduled times don't line up.
